Nurturing Local Choices
Educating people about local produce (school project)
Produce often travels long distances before it reaches the shelves in grocery stores. The shipping process results in fossil fuels burned and car- bon dioxide put into the atmosphere. The length of the shipping time also requires produce to be picked early so it arrives to the store ripe or nearly ripe. Nutrients end up metabolized and lost in the shipping process. Shipped produce sends money outside of the community whereas local produce supports local business.

The aim of my project was to educate consumers about the true costs and effects of purchasing non-local produce. My first deliverable was a labeling system which would be in direct association with the produce. It would give the consumer an idea of how far that type of produce had travelled. The label also had a QR code and url which allowed the user to use a smartphone or an iphone app which would provide further detail about that particular type of produce. Finally, a series of three posters to be placed in grocery stores would address the three main benefits of local produce.
